Enjoy the Summer in Mendocino County

June 7, 2009

The current financial crisis will pass. Somewhere down the line there will be another boom, then another bust. As sure as we have a rainy season and a dry season here in Mendocino County.

Even the unemployed can enjoy the fine summer weather. Today, on the ridge above Point Arena, the air temperature did not quite hit 70 degrees in the shade, but it felt warmer in the sun. I call that perfect.

I have noticed, driving around, that some neighbors already have vast quantities of wood cut, split, and drying for the next round of winter. I just about ran through my supply in late spring this year. But with fire hazard looking to be high, I have already started cutting out dead manzanita, pine, and rhododendra on my lot, restocking.

There is talk that parks may be closed. We are all used to the stupidity of government. Humankind has been getting used to it for millenia. But closing parks during a recession is right up there with expecting two-thirds of the state legislature to agree on a budget or taxes.

No money for employees? Just leave the gates to the parks open. Let people enjoy California for free. It is our California. And if a tourist from Texas or even Tajikistan wants to picnic or camp out for free, that is fine too. They have to spend money for gas and groceries, which can only help our local economy.

How about a See California Free campaign this year?

Might as well enjoy the summer, especially if you are unemployed. If you remain employed, don't forget that government is not really all that great at the welfare game. Local charities that need a hand even during good times are in particular need of your donations this summer.
